Important information about
your new Svivlo reel

Svivlo Genesis ONE – The basics

Side plate

Svivlo Genesis ONE side plate contains the CastGuard assembly and provides access to the spool. Use the switch to open the side plate.

Access switch

The switch is used to open the Genesis ONE side plate. Push it down to release the side plate, and push it up to lock the sideplate. Be careful when closing the side plate and make sure the axels are aligned.

Spool tension brake

The spool tension brake used to remove the slack on the spool axle. It can also be used to control the agressivness of CastGuard.

Clutch bar

The clutch is used to release the spool and allow it to feed out line. Press down the clutch and place the thumb on the spool before casting. Release the thumb as you cast to allow the line to feed out. The clutch will engage as soon as you turn the handle.

Drag brake

The drag brake is used to configure how much force is required to pull out the line. Adjust this prior to fishing so that the line does not brkae when you catch a fish.

Svivlo Draken ONE – The basics

Side plate

Svivlo Draken ONE side plate contains the CastGuard assembly and provides access to the spool. Use the switch to open the side plate.

Access switch

The switch is used to open the Draken ONE side plate. Push it backwards to release the side plate, and push it forward to lock the sideplate. Be very careful to bot drop the sideplate as it becomes loose when opening. Be also careful when closing the side plate and make sure the axels are aligned.

Get started with Svivlo Genesis ONE and Draken ONE

Even though the reel looks like a normal baitcaster, the handling is completely different than what you might expect. In the section below you’ll find the most important information to get fishing in no time and keeping your reel in pristine condition.

First impression
Spool line
Before you cast
Casting
When you open up the box, pick up the reel and start turning the handle, you might notice a non-fluid motion. This is fully normal and due to the design and functionality of CastGuard™. Once you start fishing, this sensation will not be noticeable. The cast control system CastGuard needs to be used for a few casts before you get maximum performance and is referred to as a bed-in process similar to how performance brake pads on a car needs to be run-in. You can read more about the CastGuard bed-in process on this page.

Once you have put line on the spool, make sure that the spool tension knob is tightened just so that there’s no leeway or gap. There’s no need to tighten it more than that unless you’re a beginner and are learning casting tecnique, or risk catching a branch. Tightening the spool tension brake will make CastGuard more aggressive and react quicker.

Picture 1: Check for spool axle leeway. Press down the reel clutch and move the spool sideways to check if there’s any leeway.

Picture 2: Spool tension knob. Turning it clockwise reduces leeway. Tightening the spool tension too much might damage the reel.

You might be used to adjusting the spool tension brake every time you change lure in order for it to drop slowly to the ground. Normally this reduces the risk for getting backlash specifically at the end of the cast.

After you put on a lure on Svivlo Genesis ONE or Draken ONE, you DO NOT have to make any adjustments to the spool tension brake. Not even after changing lure weight. CastGuard will take care of it all.

You might be used to put you thumb lightly against the spool when casting to avoid line overrun and backlash. You are also used to stop the spool with your thumb when the lure hits the water.

Casting in strong head wind or tackling wind gusts are usually very challenging and prone to very easily create birds nests.

With Svivlo Genesis ONE and Draken ONE, none of this is needed as CastGuard will master the reel for you so you can focus on fishing.

Our story
The watchmaker and IT-guy

So, how did this come about at all? Svivlo, a Brillianze Sweden AB company, was founded by the Swedish watchmaker Sten-Thore Zander and his son Patrik Zander. As a watchmaker and spending his whole life managing small complex objects in motion, and without being an angler, he decided to do something about baitcasting problem. After many years, thousands and thousands of hours engineering, building and testing he finally solved the baitcasters Gordian knot and invented the world’s only properly working cast brake.

Bringing the Swedish watchmaker legacy into the fishing future

In late 2016 his son, who had always worked with IT and software, decided to take the solution to market. After applying for a patent, the two started work to build better prototypes and show them to reel manufacturers. There was some interest in the beginning, but due to lack of development progress and technology understanding, we had to do this on our own.

Development went on, but in 2019 Sten-Thore fell badly with his rollator causing a visit to the emergency room. We then decided to focus on developing a brake system for rollators – RolloGuard. Sadly Sten-Thore passed away in 2021, but it gave us even more determination to bring his dream to life.

And here we are.

The CastGuard™ bedding procedure

Similar to running in brakes on a race car to get optimum performance, a Svivlo reel with CastGuard also need to be run in.

When turning the handle of the Svivlo reel, you may feel a non-fluid movement. This is normal and is because the CastGuard brake arm has to become compatible with the brake drum so that they fit together. This process, called bedding, usually takes 10-20 casts but the number can vary depending on cast distance, handle rotation speed and other parameters.

The bedding process creates a few micrometers thick layer of brass from the brake drum on the CastGuard brake arm. This process also removes imperfections that occurred during the manufacturing process and aligns the two surfaces into a near perfect geometric match.

Clean the exterior after every use. Dirt, debris, salt, or sand can lead to wear and tear.

Tighten the spool tension cap and star drag. Carefully rinse the reel under slow running fresh water or using a spray bottle. Make sure not to rinse the reel with high pressure water as it will damage the reel. Dry off the reel with a clean and dry cloth. Use a cotton swab or toothbrush with isopropyl rubbing alcohol to clean any visible dirt and debris from the exterior of the reel that did not come off during the rinse.

Once a month we recommend putting one drop of oil on the level wind worm gear to ensure smooth operation.

Occasionally remove the side plate and gently take out the spool. Use a cotton swab to gently clean the pinion gear and remove any visible dirt or debris on the reel itself. Inspect and clean the spool assembly and make sure to not lubricate the spool shaft.

Loosen the spool tension cap and reassemble the spool and side plate. Make sure that the spool axle fits with the CastGuard axle.

Once a year, or more frequent depending on use, we recommend sending the reel to a Svivlo authorized service center for professional maintenance and thus extending the life of your Svivlo caster.
